Industrial Age

In this lesson we talked about Industrial age , consequences of this and 'a modest proposal' written by Jonathan Swift.

    In industrial age we can easily notice some advance in trade and agriculture at the same time in some areas socio-economic wellbeing. Factories were established almost everywhere in London. Thanks to this , such a lot person worked in this factories. However , this situation had some disadvantages , too. Some poor family's children  worked and they were even 5 years old. There were so much child death. They lived in overcrowded house , resulting from hygiene problems, there became a lot outbreak and so may people mostly children died.

     Poor life is one side of London but other side is much better for the rich . Thanks to industrial age the rich became richer so they began to interest in literature and they started to read book (because of book price , just rich people could read ) . At the same time they had coffee house where they read book , newspaper etc.

      Thanks to their wellbeing , literature gained power , especially prose . However poetry and drama did not take interest as much as prose . Jonathan Swift wrote 'a modest proposal' , it is satire .Swift criticizes other side of London , death of this children . He criticizes the government. He says ''If we do not know what to do with this children , we can 'eat ' them . The solution is so brilliant and crazy .He makes some calculations too. Even this satire could tell us this term.

     To sum up, industrial age was mixed term for England . There was social inequality : the poor were poorer , the rich were richer .

Seize the day

This week we talked about ''Civil war and Andrew Marvell’s To His Coy Mistress''. He says ; time is passing and ,before we get older , we should seize the day.

I watched ''Death poets society '' ,it is about this theme. ''Seize the day or Carpe diem'' ; this theme was handled both centuries ago and even today. In my opinion , this thought will live forever.

We all want to give our decisions by our own in addition to this our life is too short to make other's plan. This movie is exactly about that. In every century and in every country , all human handle this subject. ''Why ?'' , because they all want to be an independent person but sometimes it is not possible . Because they get reaction from the society or their family . Therefore our decisions are taken by our society , family , culture .. I think '' Death poets society'' should be watch to every parent and they should respect to their children and they should give some decisions together for their children.

Consequently we have to struggle with this . We have just a life so ''Seize the day''.

Metaphysical Poetry

        The last lesson we talked about Metaphysical Poetry and John Donne .

     Firstly, comparing to Renaissance Era, a lot of things have change in Metaphysical poetry. For example ; love is the main topic in poetry at all times; however in Metaphysical Poems , they used physical love and unusual conceits . Although they used simple language not poetic language , with the help of ''wit''  they wrote marvelous poets. They also wrote their poets with the blend of  emotions and intellectual ingenuity . There was intense unconnected ideas , such as love sometimes connected with math.

    Secondly , the leader of Metaphysical Poetry is John Donne . He was well-educated and intelligent poet. Firstly his poems were about love. After he changed his religion and he became a famous preacher and he began to write religious poems. Because of the belief of other world, he wrote his poems about death. Along with John Donne ; George Herbert , Andrew Marvell and Henry Vaughn are such a great poets.

    To sum up, Metaphysical poems are product of intelligence . In my opinion every one could not write poems which concerned unconnected ideas.
